2017 Dr. R. Neil Lowry Grant Goes to Quechan Tribe

The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals 2017 Dr. R. Neil Lowry Grant has gone to the Quechan Parks & Recreation at the National Environmental Health Association/Department of Housing and Urban Development Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The $5,000 grant honors a public health official/department that has made outstanding contributions to advance the public’s health and safe use of recreational water in pools, spas and waterparks through educational, safety, operational and technical programs.

“The Quechan tribe is an underserved population, and many children have not had the opportunity to take swim lessons to allow them to play safely in the water,” says Lt. Isaac Ampadu, senior environmental health officer with the Indian Health Service Office of Environmental Health & Engineering (Western Arizona District), “On behalf of the Quechan Tribe, we are honored to receive the Dr. R. Neil Lowry Award to assist us in our efforts to make structured swimming opportunities possible for the Quechan community.”

The tribe will use the grant for instructor training, swimming equipment and to provide swimming lessons.
