Good Help is Hard to Find

MeganKendrick-BWWhat’s keeping you from hiring the best?

The lack of labor comes up a lot in the pool industry. We hadn’t done a story on it, and I figured it was time — and would be a good read for our show issue. I didn’t expect the article to partly become a debate over whether there really is a worker shortage. Read it on page 38.

I don’t believe this is a made-up problem, or that the people complaining don’t run great companies. It’s more nuanced than that, as many external factors affect the available workforce in a given region.

But if you’re running your business the same way now that you were 10 years ago, you’re probably going to have a hard time attracting, hiring and keeping good employees. The benefits that were attractive then may not be what people are looking for now, and the same goes with wages. Meanwhile, the marks of the Great Recession are still being felt across the country. It changed everything.

If you’re having a hard time finding and keeping good employees, before you look at the external reasons why, look at the internal factors that might be contributing.

Also, come by and see us at the International Pool | Spa | Patio Expo! We’ll be at booth #1471.
