Incorporated in 1991 by Gerald Kutsop, Top Safety Products Company, Inc., assembles quality first aid kits, related first aid supplies and safety products. Majority owner and president Jennifer Johnson purchased the company from Kutsop’s estate in August 2017.
Johnson notes that pool operators can offer commercial pool clients private-label products — customizing the exterior of the first aid kits with their own logo — as an additional revenue generator, such as Top Safety Products’ first aid kits, pool first aid kits, lifeguard kits, CPR kits, pool chemical protection kits, heat stress recovery kits and spill clean-up kits.
“Why not have the commercial pool company name, logo and reordering information on the outside of the kit?” Johnson says. “When customers need to reorder, they will call the commercial pool company instead of us. It’s also great advertising for the pool companies.”
Offering private labeling and kit customization means that Top Safety Products Company can fulfill specific needs for many companies. Jeremy Hicks, president of Ace Aquatics in Glen Burnie, Maryland, has been putting these perks to use for years.
“We use first aid supplies [from Top Safety Products]: bandages, ice packs, pool first aid kit, spill care kit, ice packs and blankets,” Hicks says. “I have never had an issue with their products; they seem to be good quality at a good price.”
Hicks says Ace Aquatics uses the products in lifeguard training classes and sells them as needed. “When bought in bulk specifically, I am able to resell them at a reasonable price to my clients,” he adds.
Johnson says that, since the kits are manually assembled, Top Safety Products can easily customize the contents. Additionally, Top Safety Products offers basic auto first aid and kits meeting OSHA/ANSI requirements for companies to keep in pool service trucks as techs may need.
With first aid products, Hicks says he looks for affordability in addition to usability. “What I really appreciate about Top Safety Products is that they offer me a variety of options for everything I have historically used, each being a little different to allow me to make informed decisions,” he says.
Hicks notes that some counties in his service area have specific first aid needs that are different than anywhere else. “Top Safety has come up with a solution to allow me to provide all of those items in one package rather than piecemealing it out,” Hicks says.
Customization and robust product offerings are at the forefront of Top Safety Products, and Johnson is most proud of the culture and makeup of the company. The company became a certified Women-Owned Small Business by the State of New Jersey in 2019. Additionally, the company was recently certified a Women Business Enterprise and Women-Owned Small Business by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council. In addition to being a women-owned business, Top Safety Products is involved in the community.
“The most unique aspect of Top Safety Products is our skilled team and collaboration with the Midland School’s Adult Services,” Johnson says. “In January 2017, we became the first successful Supported Employment Enclave. We proudly provide our four-person Midland Crew with life skills and job training in a safe work environment for teammates with intellectual and developmental disabilities.”
