When Olivia Powell graduated from Florida State University in 2020, she entered the workforce at the height of the pandemic — when job opportunities were scarce. She found a job at Viking Capital as an assistant under the company’s director of marketing. She started part time and within a year and a half, she was promoted to full-time business development manager, taking on Viking’s West Coast clientele from San Diego and working directly with builders across Southern California. By February 2024, she had earned the title of director of marketing.
Powell flourishes in the culture of teamwork at Viking Capital. “We all come to work in the morning with the same goal — to do our very best as a team to make VC the best option for our builder partners and our borrowers,” Powell says. “When you have a positive work environment, an inspiring team of leadership and the creative freedom to try new things, every day is exciting.”
In March 2024, she reshaped Viking’s marketing approach by sponsoring Temecula Little League as the VIP sponsor, which blended advertising with community support. What began as a gamble strengthened local ties and proved a marketing success. “It feels nice to do well at my job but also make a difference,” Powell says.
Transitioning into the pool and finance industries brought challenges — especially for someone with a degree in editing, writing and media who describes herself as more creative than numbers-driven. Learning the complexities of financing, such as how a “free” loan can end up more costly than one with consulting fees, required diligence and adaptability. Yet, Powell now sees that knowledge as a gift, enabling her to communicate effectively and educate clients in clear, approachable ways.
Powell is committed to growth, taking online marketing and business classes, sharpening her strategy skills and constantly seeking inspiration to bring her best to her team. “It’s a lot of pressure but mostly an honor to have the director title so early in my career,” she says. “I want to earn it — and more — every day,” she says. She also hopes to connect with more women in the industry, noting the inspiration she’s drawn from female leaders she’s met.
Powell is happiest near the water. When visiting family in Florida, she spends as much time as possible snorkeling, fishing or swimming, and at home in San Diego, she’s learning to surf. She also enjoys walks on the boardwalk, painting, Pilates and reading.
