Mason Guarino started his pool career at South Shore Gunite Pools & Spas, working summers and when he was off school, doing rebar, shotcrete, gunite, plaster, plumbing, excavation, grading and flatwork. He got a bachelor’s of science in construction management and started full time at the company in 2009. He has since started his own company, Accelerated Pools.
“I love construction and organization, and have spent a lot of time improving efficiency in my company and trying to make things more straightforward and simplified,” Guarino says. He’s added a CRM system as well as new positions to help free up time for the company president to focus on the future.
Guarino has taken a special interest in shotcrete: Not only is he an ACI certified nozzleman himself, but he also serves on the American Shotcrete Association board and is the chairman of its swimming pool committee. He’s also a lead author of the new ACI 506-OH guide to swimming pool shotcrete, and he expanded SSG’s shotcrete division outside the swimming pool industry, which keeps crews busy when pool work is done.
“We fix concrete, dams, bridges and many more shotcrete related projects,” Guarino says. “A big part of my job is educating employees on safety, proper construction techniques and making sure they understand why they are doing what they are doing, and how it will work when the pools are done. I like to provide information so the employees enjoy what they are doing and understand it to the point that we can have educated conversations about possible improvements.”
