In 2009, Sean Kochendorfer was laid off from his job as an auto mechanic and started filling in at his friend’s pool service company. Soon after Kochendorfer started his own pool company in California, accruing over 60 accounts within a year. However, he wanted to learn more about pool repair. Another pool company owner Kochendorfer met through IPSSA offered to teach him the ropes, but only if Kochendorfer would work for him. And he did — for 10 years.
During this time, he worked his way from maintenance to major repairs and installs, and after about five years, he was in a management position. Kochendorfer was doing most of the diagnostics, repairs and installs for the company, he says, until the owner retired.
At the same time, he and his fiancée moved to Arizona upon her suggestion that the pool industry there would offer even more opportunities, Kochendorfer says of their 2019 relocation. He met the owners of his current company through a Craigslist ad, “and they hired me on after quite possibly the best interview I have ever been on.”
“They took my wife and I out for tacos and margaritas, and I knew it was meant to be,” he continues. “Now our company is growing as fast as we can hire, and I’ve never been more excited about my future in this industry.”
