Yes, You Are a Salesperson

I have never considered myself a salesperson, and I’m guessing many of you feel the same. There are plenty of negative connotations connected to the word and field. Of course, now that I’m a business owner, sales is a big part of what I do and my responsibility to my team. But even looking back to when I was a writer for the magazine, it took sales skills to persuade people to participate in articles and sometimes to coax quotable answers from them.

When you think about your job, I bet you’re doing a lot more selling than you think, like explaining to a customer why a piece of equipment should be replaced or answering questions about why certain treatments are needed. Earlier this year (March/April 2024), I lamented the lack of sales training in our industry, particularly for people working in the field. I’m bringing it up again because we might have a solution to your sales training woes. Starting in September, PoolPro — with the help of Steve Hasenmueller from Effort Today Enterprises — is launching a sales training program. This isn’t a one-off class or webinar; we’re talking about a yearlong journey with weekly touchpoints, monthly workshops and a community of peers to learn from and be inspired by.
